Apple have announced the new iPad 10. The new base model comes with plenty of new features and will likely be on plenty of Christmas lists this year.
For the first time in a few generations, the iPad 10 comes with a complete design overhaul. Rather than simply chucking a new processor into the same case, Apple’s new iPad looks sleeker and more stylish than ever. Here’s what you need to know:
Design
The biggest change to the iPad 10 is the new design. The base-model iPad no longer looks like a cheap imitation of the Pro range. Instead, it comes in a variety of fun colours – yellow, blue, pink, and silver -, with flat sides and a thin frame.
Apple have also moved the front camera from the top of the iPad to the long edge – like where it would be on a laptop screen. This makes it much easier to FaceTime and video call other people when using the tablet horizontally and is great for families who need to fit multiple people in the frame when doing so.
Specifications
Let us get a bit Geeky for a while – we’ll try to make this as uncomplicated as possible! Here’s some notes about the iPad 10’s specification which excite the Geeks2U technicians:
- There are two storage options available – 64GB and 256GB. To be honest, we would almost always recommend the larger of the two options, especially if this iPad is your primary device and you use it to take photos and videos.
- The iPad 10 comes with a landscape-oriented 12MP ultrawide front camera – essentially meaning your photos will be sharper than ever, and you’ll be able to fit more people in the frame (Christmas snaps anyone?). For reference, the iPad 9 had an 8MP camera, so it’s a nice improvement. You can record videos in 4K too!
- The processor (the main chip which tells all other components within what to do) is Apple’s A14 Bionic processor. It’s not their most recent processor, but it’s an upgrade nonetheless and should do just fine on this device.
- The iPad 10 uses USB-C as their main port, dropping Lightning from this model entirely. Us Geeks are happy for this change – we’re all in favour of one cable to charge all your devices and USB-C is the best option for that. Apple have also included a Lightning to USB-C adaptor in the box, so you can still use a Lightning cable to charge your iPad 10.
- Unsurprisingly, the headphone jack is gone from the iPad 10, so Bluetooth headphones or a USB-C to headphone converter are you only options now, in line with iPhones.
Display
Arguably the most important part of an iPad is the screen. For those familiar, the iPad 10 looks like the latest iPad Air or iPad Mini – with uniform bezels (the black bar around the screen) and the removal of the “Home” button. Touch ID is still an option to unlock your iPad, but you now use the power button to scan your fingerprint rather than the “Home” button.
The screen is bigger than the iPad 9, upgrading from 10.2 inches to 10.9 inches. We’re glad to see that upgrade – the whole point of the iPad is the big, clear screen, and the addition 0.7 inches are a nice touch, making it the biggest baseline model ever. It doesn’t have a bigger frame either – the increase in screen size was possible due to the aforementioned removal of the “Home” button. For those for like to measure in pixels resolution (our fellow Geeks), that’s 2360 x 1640p at 264 pixels per inch.
